MOSAIC GLASS ART

Trina Davis of Mosaic Salon and Gallery, located at 625 N. Carrollton, grew up in New Orleans and became aware of the unique architecture of the city at an early age. Before starting on her own personal journey in the arts, she was curator of new and emerging artists. Her evacuation from Hurricane Katrina took her to St. Louis. While passing time in the city, she had the opportunity to visit the St. Louis Basilica Cathedral. Trina was awed by the power of the mosaics and stained glass that presented stories and conveyed ideas. This is when she started assembling whatever she could find and, in the process, found the acuity to render with the rubble.

Gallery

Trina says: "The city of New Orleans was broken when we were allowed to re-enter. But we also re-entered the dreams and lives of each other - our old and new friends who had been displaced, as well. From the trash and debris lining the streets, I gathered bits and pieces of what had been destroyed- but remained in an attempt to salvage and reconstruct what the city had meant to me. As I traveled across the city, I always kept an eye out for discarded remnants of people's lives. Sometimes the personal objects that I found were unmistakably durable reminders of what was lost. The imagery that I create oftentimes evolves from the found objects and colors of the broken glass that come my way. I draw my inspiration from the colorful history and culture of the city that is my home. I use a variety of materials, from vintage fabrics to old film negatives, rusted iron, glass blocks, broken liquor bottles and the window frames that no longer have a home. Although broken, many of us have been able to pick up the fragments of what was beautiful and with those pieces begin to re-create."
